About Fofoulah
The London-based band Fofoulah (meaning “It’s there” in Wolof) was formed in 2011. With the rhythms of the Sabar drums – a traditional form of Wolof drumming from Gambia and Senegal – at its heart, Fofoulah’s music has evolved into an inspired cosmopolitan mix that also incorporates elements of electronic music, dub, improvisation and afro beat. Like the complex city they live in, their music is shaped and lifted by diverse sound-worlds and cultures.
Fofoulah released their debut album in 2014 on Glitterbeat Records (WOMEX label award winner 2014-2017) and featured guests artists including Juldeh Camara and Ghostpoet. Music from the album was played by on BBC Radio by Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe, Tom Ravenscroft and Jamie Cullum. The band has performed all over the UK and Europe including venues such as The Royal Festival Hall Foyer, The festival Aux heures d’été in Nantes and live sets on BBC Radio 3 and Resonance FM.
“Really intelligent, infectious and effective … It’s subtle, beckoning with its toes in the ancestral mud, but this is modern music, intriguing, well-textured and very likeable.” fRoots
“A bravely adventurous new fusion band.” **** The Guardian
“A coolly confident debut, this is sure to be on my list of the year’s best albums.” ***** The Independent on Sunday
“With solid roots in West African sabar drumming, Fofoulah blend multiple genres to create a complex fusion of modern pop, jazz, rock, electro, hip-hop, prog and dub … A promising debut from an exciting and talented group of musicians.” **** Songlines (Top of the World album)
